At the beginning of the 2009 season, every player, coach and even the owner of the Texans were proclaiming it was a playoff or bust season. The team lost many games that they should have won. The coach made in-game decisions that seemed to baffle everyone, and made personel decisions seemingly based on factors not related to on-field production.
Even with all that, the Texans finished 9-7, the best season record in team history. The team was literally one game away from the playoffs. Win one of those games the team gave away and they would have been in the playoffs. Many teams can look back on games they gave away with regret. The Texans may have more talent on both sides of the ball than any other non-playoff team in the league.
So the question is what was wrong? In my opinion, coaching decisions at times this season were horrific and made me question if Gary Kubiak actually had a grasp of what was happening on the field. The halfback pass attempt against the Jags, the constant relying on Kris Brown when you knew he was having a bad year, the season-long moving away from whatever is working shakes my confidence in Gary.
This is not the first time I have questioned his coaching ability. I have thought the talent has surpassed the coach for awhile. I feel like Gary is learning on the job when an experienced coach would get more out of this team. With the team finshing with a positive record for the first time, I knew it would be hard for the owner to fire Gary. With the way they beat the Patriots in the last game, all those good feelings, it would be quite the buzzkill to fire him.
But with that said, the owner didn't offer an extension. The owner didn't talk about "we hope to have him here for years to come". The owner rocognized that Gary made mistakes. Allowing him to go into his last season without a new contract sends a message. If those same mistakes happen again and the Texans start losing games because of them, then you are out. This team has too much potential to allow the head coach to hold them back.
While I wanted Gary gone, I am fine with one more season. The team showed resolve and finished the season strong. They actually started the season strong. The middle was the problem. Next year the Texans get the NFC East and a 2nd place schedule. This is going to be a tough schedule coming up. Let's see where Gary leads them.
